Interior of Paramount Theatre, an Art Deco masterpiece

Welcome to the Web site for Art Deco San Francisco: The Architecture of Timothy Pflueger, a new book from Princeton Architectural Press chronicling the life, work and times of one of San Francisco’s important native sons. Timothy Pflueger was one of the city’s most notable architects during the Roaring Twenties, through the Great Depression and until his early death in 1946. We hope you enjoy learning more about Pflueger and his architecture, which spans from his early work in the Beaux Arts style to the Moderne, now referred to as Art Deco.

Pflueger’s buildings mirrored their times: from the jazzy buoyancy in his early skyscrapers to the streamlined look in schools and other buildings during the Depression. This site features some of Tom Paiva’s gorgeous photographs from the book, and four self-guided tours to see Pflueger’s buildings whether you live in or are visiting San Francisco.
